1996 to 1998 Vortec only, the horizontal crab-style cap unique to these engines, plug wires exit sideways to clear the upper intake plenum. Not the same as the earlier TBI distributor.
Why it matters
The crab cap's internal traces cross over each other inside the plastic moulding, which makes these caps prone to trapping moisture, internal arcing, and premature misfires, more so than a conventional radial cap. Cap and rotor wear as a pair, so replacing both together avoids chasing the same fault twice.
