Every o-ring at every joint opened during an AC service must be replaced. This is not optional — original rubber o-rings from a car this age have hardened and will leak, and a system that fails to hold vacuum after a major service is almost always down to a reused o-ring.
HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is the correct material for R134a systems. It resists both PAG and Ester oils and handles the higher operating pressures of R134a better than original-spec nitrile rubber.
