Every o-ring at every joint opened during an AC service must be replaced. Defender AC systems from this era use original rubber o-rings that will have hardened with age and UAE heat — reusing them after opening joints is a common cause of a system that won't hold vacuum after a major service.
HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is the correct material for R134a systems. It resists both PAG and Ester oils and handles the higher operating pressures of R134a better than original-spec nitrile rubber.
