Why Steering Degradation on a GMT400 Is a Different Problem in the UAE

In most climates, vague or notchy steering is an annoyance. In the UAE and GCC, where trucks navigate high-speed highways, sandy desert tracks, and stop-start city traffic in temperatures that can exceed 45°C, degraded steering is a safety concern. A GMT400 C/K with a worn factory steering shaft doesn't just feel imprecise, it introduces a dead zone around centre that makes the truck unpredictable at speed and fatiguing in urban traffic.

These systems are now three decades old. The factory collapsible shaft was engineered to meet 1990s safety impact requirements, not to deliver precision feel for the lifetime of the vehicle. In UAE conditions, with heat cycling accelerating plastic liner degradation and desert use adding additional stress, a shaft that might last 30 years in a temperate climate will often fail sooner. The steering column and shaft architecture is shared across the entire C/K and SUV platform. Body style doesn't affect fitment; model year and whether the truck is 2WD or 4WD does, as the lower shaft angle differs slightly. The Borgeson kit covers both configurations.

Know the Signs: Common Failure Symptoms

  • Dead zone or vagueness around centre - the wheel moves slightly before steering response is felt; the truck wanders on long straight roads
  • Clunking or knocking over rough surfaces - particularly on washboard tracks or speed bumps; the slop in the shaft becomes audible as well as tactile
  • Notchy or stiff feel when turning slowly - binding in the slip joint, often worse when cold or after the truck has been sitting in direct sun
  • Shimmy or vibration returning to centre - the shaft's worn joint allows small oscillations that wouldn't be transmitted with a solid connection
  • Looseness that doesn't improve with front end work - if tie rods and idler arm are in good condition but the steering still feels sloppy, the shaft is the remaining variable

Critical: What the Factory Shaft Actually Gets Wrong

Read this before deciding whether the shaft is actually your problem.

The original GMT400 steering shaft uses a two-piece collapsible design with a plastic-lined slip joint. The collapsible section was a safety requirement of the era - it allows the shaft to compress during a front impact rather than driving the steering wheel into the driver. That engineering constraint, however, was never optimised for steering feel, and the plastic-lined joint develops slop as the liner wears.

In UAE and GCC conditions, that wear happens faster for two specific reasons:

  • Heat cycling. Ambient temperatures exceeding 45°C and UV exposure accelerate degradation of the plastic liner. A joint that might last 25 years in Europe may show meaningful slop in 15 years here.
  • Desert use. Fine particulate contamination accelerates abrasive wear inside the slip joint. Even trucks that aren't driven off-road are exposed to airborne sand that finds its way into unprotected joints.

Greasing the slip joint is the standard temporary fix, and it works - for a while. It does not address the worn liner, and each greasing interval tends to be shorter than the last. At a certain point, the joint simply has too much slop to grease away, and the shaft needs to be replaced.

The Borgeson solution eliminates the problem rather than managing it. The Borgeson kit replaces the factory shaft with a solid steel shaft using double U-joints built to tighter tolerances. There is no plastic liner, no slip joint, and no progressive wear mechanism. The improvement in steering feel is immediate and does not degrade over time.

The Budget Alternative: Jeep XJ / Commander Shaft

The Jeep Cherokee XJ and Commander steering shaft is a well-documented community alternative to the Borgeson kit. It is a solid shaft swap that eliminates the factory slip joint slop at a fraction of the cost, and it has been used successfully on GMT400 trucks for years. The GMT400 community has documented the process thoroughly online.

The fit requires minor modification at one end - typically a U-joint swap or minor shaft trimming depending on year and configuration - and it is not a bolt-in like the Borgeson. If you are comfortable with basic fabrication, or have a workshop that is, it is a legitimate option worth knowing about.

The Borgeson kit is recommended here because it is a confirmed bolt-in fit with no modification required. In the UAE and GCC, where specialist GMT400 knowledge is scarce and finding a workshop confident in custom shaft work is not straightforward, removing the fabrication variable matters. But the XJ shaft works, the cost difference is real, and if you have the right workshop behind you, it is worth considering.

UAE-Specific Failure Patterns

Heat-accelerated liner wear. As noted above, the plastic liner in the factory slip joint degrades faster in sustained high ambient temperatures. If a truck has spent multiple UAE summers in regular use, liner wear should be assumed rather than inspected for - inspection alone won't catch early-stage degradation.

Sand contamination. Fine desert sand is abrasive and finds its way into the slip joint through the factory rubber boot. A boot that looks intact from the outside may not be sealing effectively. Inspect the boot for cracks along folds and at the clamp points.

Binding after heat soak. A truck parked in direct sun for several hours will have a steering shaft that has thermally expanded. If the slip joint is already borderline, this can manifest as temporary binding or stiffness that eases as the truck cools. This is often misdiagnosed as a power steering issue.

Compounded front end wear. GCC roads - particularly in older industrial and port areas - have surface quality that accelerates wear on all front end components simultaneously. A truck showing shaft slop will almost always have worn tie rod ends and a degraded idler arm alongside it. The shaft upgrade alone will reveal this remaining slop rather than eliminate it.

Diagnosis: Step by Step

Preliminary checks - do these first:

  • With the engine off, hold the steering wheel firmly and attempt to rotate it slightly in each direction without turning the front wheels - any movement before the wheels respond is dead travel in the system
  • Note whether the looseness is consistent or varies with temperature (hot vs. cold)
  • Check the factory rubber boot on the shaft for cracks, tears, or separation at the clamps
  • Inspect visually for any oily contamination around the slip joint - suggests the boot has failed

Isolating the shaft from the rest of the front end:

  • Have an assistant hold the steering wheel while you observe the shaft, tie rod ends, and idler arm for movement
  • Movement at the shaft before movement at the tie rods confirms the shaft is the primary source
  • Movement at the idler arm or tie rod ends without shaft movement points elsewhere - address those first
  • Both can be present simultaneously; address the shaft and front end together in this case

Confirming the right fix:

  • Shaft replacement is the correct solution when: the slip joint has measurable slop, greasing no longer holds, or the boot has failed and contamination is present
  • If the shaft itself is in acceptable condition but the steering still feels loose, check the steering gear box adjuster plug and the rag joint (coupling) at the base of the column before proceeding to a shaft replacement

Installation Overview

  1. Disconnect the battery before starting any steering column work
  2. Mark the steering shaft position relative to the steering gear input shaft before removal - this preserves your steering wheel centre
  3. Remove the pinch bolt(s) securing the factory shaft at the steering gear and at the column
  4. Slide the factory shaft out - it will compress as it releases from the slip joint
  5. Inspect the rag joint / steering coupling at the column base; replace now if worn
  6. Install the new shaft, aligning to your reference marks - do not torque the pinch bolts until the shaft is correctly positioned through its full range of motion
  7. Confirm the shaft has adequate clearance from the exhaust and firewall through the full steering lock in both directions before final torque
  8. Torque pinch bolts to specification (refer to the kit's included instructions for final torque values)
  9. Reconnect the battery and test steering feel with the engine running before returning the truck to road use
  10. Book a front end alignment - do not skip this step, particularly if tie rods or idler arm were replaced at the same time
