The M116 and M117 V8 Engines in the Gulf: What Powers the 450SL, 500SL and 560SL and What Owners Need to Know
The Mercedes R107 came to the Gulf in one meaningful configuration: V8 petrol. The 450SL, the 500SL and the 560SL are the variants that arrived here in any numbers, and the engines in those cars are the M116 and M117 family. Understanding what these engines are, how they differ across the production run, and what fails in UAE conditions is the foundation of keeping an R107 running in this region.
The M116 and M117: what they are
The M116 and M117 are single-overhead-camshaft V8 engines developed by Mercedes-Benz in the early 1970s and refined continuously through to the end of R107 production in 1989. They share the same fundamental architecture: a 90-degree V8 with a single camshaft per bank, Bosch fuel injection in various forms across the production run, and a cast-iron block with aluminium cylinder heads.
The M116 displaced 3.5 or 3.8 litres and powered the 350SL and 380SL respectively. The M117 displaced 4.5, 5.0 or 5.6 litres and powered the 450SL, 500SL and 560SL. In the Gulf context the M116 is the minor variant. The M117 is what most UAE owners are running.
How the M117 variants differ
The 450SL (1971-1980) used the M117 in 4.5-litre form with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection in early production, transitioning to K-Jetronic mechanical injection. Power output was in the region of 190-217 horsepower depending on market specification. The 450SL was the dominant R107 variant globally through the 1970s and a meaningful number reached the Gulf through official and private channels.
The 500SL (1980-1989) used the M117 in 5.0-litre form with Bosch K-Jetronic injection. This variant was produced for European and some other markets and represents a step up in displacement and refinement over the 450SL. Gulf-market 500SLs exist but are less common than the 450SL and 560SL.
The 560SL (1986-1989) is the variant that most Gulf owners know and want. It used the M117 in 5.6-litre form with Bosch KE-Jetronic injection, producing around 227 horsepower in US specification. The 560SL was sold primarily in the United States and Japan, and a meaningful number entered the UAE through grey-market import and personal import from the US. It is the highest-displacement and highest-output R107 variant, and it is the one with the most road presence.
What the engines share
Despite the displacement and fuel system differences across the production run, the M116 and M117 share enough architecture that parts overlap is significant. Short-block components, many ancillaries, cooling system items and gasket sets often cross between variants. An owner or workshop familiar with one M117 variant will find the others straightforward.
This cross-compatibility matters practically: it means that a specialist supplier who understands one variant of the R107 engine can usually source for the others. It also means that good used parts from donor cars of different variants can sometimes be applied across the range.
What fails in UAE conditions
The M116 and M117 are robust engines that respond well to maintenance and fail predictably when maintenance is neglected. Gulf conditions accelerate specific failure modes.
The fuel injection system is the most common source of driveability complaints on UAE-operated R107s. The K-Jetronic and KE-Jetronic mechanical injection systems fitted to the 450SL, 500SL and 560SL are sensitive to fuel quality and to the condition of the fuel distributor, injectors and warm-up regulator. Injectors on cars that have sat for extended periods varnish internally and deliver uneven fuelling. The warm-up regulator, which adjusts mixture during cold start, fails on high-mileage cars and causes rich running and fuel smell. A professional injection service, including injector cleaning and calibration, is the correct first step on any R107 with unknown injection history.
The vacuum system on V8 R107s is extensive. It controls the central locking, the climate control system, and several ancillary functions. In the Gulf's heat, vacuum hoses crack, harden and develop leaks that cause a cascade of symptoms: doors that do not lock or unlock correctly, climate control that defaults to one position, idle instability. A systematic vacuum hose replacement is often the correct approach rather than chasing individual symptoms.
The cooling system works hard in the Gulf. The M117 runs at higher temperatures than many European engines of the era, and the thermostat, water pump and radiator condition are critical. The viscous fan clutch is a specific item to check: a worn fan clutch allows the engine to run hotter than it should at low speeds, which over time degrades head gasket condition and accelerates coolant system wear. Replacement fan clutches for the M117 are available but require correct specification matching.
The timing chain on the M116 and M117 is a known wear item on high-mileage engines. Unlike a rubber belt, the chain does not snap without warning, but a worn chain causes timing noise, reduced performance and eventual timing errors if not addressed. Chain and guide replacement on the M117 is a workshop job requiring engine access, but it is well within the capability of any competent independent specialist.
Valve stem seals harden with age and heat. The symptom is blue smoke on startup that clears as the engine warms. It is not an immediate mechanical threat but indicates seals that will eventually require replacement. On an engine with otherwise good compression and clean oil, worn valve stem seals are a maintenance item rather than a crisis.
What is difficult to find
Mechanical parts for the M117 have good global availability through Mercedes specialists and the aftermarket. Injection components, gaskets, cooling parts, chains and guides are all findable through the right supply channels.
What is difficult is the overlap between mechanical and body-related items specific to Gulf-specification cars. Cooling system components specified for higher ambient temperatures, air conditioning parts for the Gulf-spec climate system, and any item where the UAE-market configuration differs from the standard European or US specification requires a supplier who understands the distinction.
Fuel injection specialists who understand the K-Jetronic and KE-Jetronic systems are available globally but not in the UAE in any number. Remote diagnosis, parts sourcing and sending components to a known-good specialist for bench testing is often the practical path for injection system work.
