The system was engineered seriously — this is not an afterthought installation like on the early Defender.
What the engineers did not anticipate was 45°C UAE summer heat, a vehicle that may have sat in the sun for hours before being driven, and a system that is now between 35 and 55 years old. The R107's AC architecture is robust, but age, refrigerant changes, and climate stress combine to create predictable failure patterns. This guide covers all of them.
One note on parts philosophy before anything else: on the R107, genuine Mercedes-Benz parts are the correct starting point for any AC component where they remain available. The owners of these vehicles value originality, the quality differential between genuine and budget aftermarket is real and measurable, and the cost of a failed cheap compressor — in labour, in repeat parts, in damage to a vehicle that is now appreciating in value — makes the saving irrelevant. The primary focus of this guide is the V8 variants — 380 SL, 450 SL, 500 SL, and 560 SL — as these are the predominant vehicles in the UAE and GCC market. The six-cylinder 280 SL shares much of the same AC architecture and this guide applies, but compressor specs differ; confirm before ordering.
US vs European Specification — This Matters
This is not a detail you can skip on an R107. The UAE market contains a genuine mixture of US-specification and European-specification cars, and the AC systems differ in ways that affect parts ordering.

The Refrigerant Situation — R12 to R134a
All R107s left the factory on R12. Every single one. This is not a transition-year question as it is on the GMT400 or late Defender — if it's an R107, it's R12 unless it has already been converted.

R12 is no longer manufactured and is increasingly difficult and expensive to source. If the system needs to be opened, conversion to R134a is the correct decision. However, the R107 conversion requires more care than on a simpler platform:
- The original York/Tecumseh piston compressors are not ideal for R134a. If the compressor is being replaced anyway, this is the point to fit an R134a-compatible unit.
- R134a operates at higher pressures than R12. The R107's original hoses and seals should be inspected carefully and replaced where there is any doubt.
- The system should be properly flushed of residual mineral oil before charging with R134a and PAG oil.
- R134a will typically deliver slightly less cooling performance than R12 in the same system. In UAE conditions, this makes condenser condition and airflow critical — a marginal condenser that performed adequately on R12 may not on R134a in 45°C heat.
How to confirm conversion status: Check the service port size (R134a ports are larger) and check for a conversion sticker, typically on the firewall or near the compressor.
Know the Signs — Common Failure Symptoms
- Compressor not engaging, or engaging with noise — clutch failure, seized compressor, or electrical fault
- Weak or intermittent cooling — low refrigerant, expansion valve fault, or compressor wear
- Cooling that works at speed but fails in traffic — auxiliary fan fault or condenser airflow issue
- Musty smell from vents — evaporator microbial growth, common on cars that sit unused
- Oily residue at fittings or hose ends — refrigerant leak at aged seals
- System won't hold vacuum — leak present, must be resolved before charging
R107-Specific Failure Points
Compressor — York/Tecumseh (early) and Nippondenso (later). Early R107s, particularly the 450 SL, were fitted with York or Tecumseh piston-type compressors. These are large, heavy units that are rebuildable but increasingly difficult to source new. When an early compressor fails, many owners convert to a Nippondenso or Sanden scroll-type unit. Later cars (approximately 1980 onward) received Nippondenso compressors, which are better supported and have a stronger aftermarket.
Expansion valve (TXV). The R107 uses a thermostatic expansion valve. This is a known wear item and a common cause of poor cooling performance. Symptoms of a failing TXV include icing of the evaporator, erratic cooling, or a system that works at some throttle positions but not others.
Evaporator. The R107 evaporator is located deep in the dashboard — access is significant labour. On a car this age it is a known failure point: corrosion, pinhole leaks, and microbial build-up. If the evaporator needs to come out for any reason, it should be replaced rather than refitted.
Condenser. In UAE conditions — sand, dust, high ambient temps — a partially blocked condenser will push system pressures beyond design limits and accelerate compressor wear. Inspect at every AC service and replace if fin condition is poor.
Receiver-drier. Must be replaced any time the system is opened. The desiccant in an original or old unit will be saturated, and a contaminated drier will damage a new compressor quickly.
Hoses and seals. Original R107 AC hoses are between 35 and 55 years old. Any hose that is original should be treated as a replacement candidate. HNBR o-rings are required at every joint opened.
Auxiliary fan. The R107's condenser relies on both ram air at speed and an electric auxiliary fan at low speed and idle. Fan motor failure is common and results in a system that cools at motorway speeds but fails completely in traffic — a specific UAE problem. Check the fan motor before condemning the AC system.
UAE-Specific Failure Patterns
The sitting-car problem. A significant number of R107s in the UAE are weekend or occasional-use vehicles. A car that sits in direct sun for extended periods and is then asked to cool down rapidly places enormous short-term stress on the AC system. Seals that have dried out during storage are asked to seal immediately, and the compressor goes from cold to full load instantly. This pattern accelerates wear faster than regular daily use.
Condenser performance at UAE temperatures. The R107's system was designed for European and US ambient temperatures. At 45°C, the system is operating near its design limits even when everything is working correctly. A partially blocked condenser, a marginal fan, or low refrigerant charge — any one of which would be invisible in a cooler climate — will result in total cooling failure in UAE summer. There is no margin for a component that is mostly OK.
R12 to R134a performance expectations. R134a is inherently less efficient than R12 in the same system. On an R107 in UAE conditions, a converted system must have a fully clean condenser, a correctly functioning fan, and accurate refrigerant charge to match the original cooling performance. A converted system with a borderline condenser will underperform noticeably.
Genuine parts — the R107 position. These cars are appreciating. The quality differential between genuine Mercedes-Benz parts and budget aftermarket is more pronounced on this platform than on the Defender or GMT400. Where genuine parts are available at reasonable cost, they are the correct choice. Where they are not, quality OEM-equivalent suppliers — Behr, Denso, Valeo — are appropriate. Budget parts from unknown suppliers are not recommended on this platform.
Diagnosis — Step by Step
Before touching anything:
- Confirm whether the system is R12 or R134a (service port size, conversion sticker)
- Confirm US or European specification (VIN prefix, compressor type)
- Check auxiliary fan operation at idle with AC on
- Check for visible oily residue at all hose ends and fittings
With gauges:
- Low side: 25–45 psi at idle, normal R134a operation
- High side: 150–250 psi depending on ambient temperature
- Both sides low: low charge or leak
- Low side high, high side low: compressor not pumping
- Both sides high: condenser not rejecting heat — check fan, fin condition, airflow
- Icing on evaporator or liquid line: TXV fault
Vacuum test:
- Pull to vacuum and hold minimum 30 minutes
- Any rise indicates a leak — locate and fix before charging

Installation Overview
- Confirm refrigerant type and market specification before ordering any parts
